Two homes on the same street can get very different quotes, and the difference is almost never the heater itself. These are the variables that move the number:
Gas line capacity: If your existing line cannot deliver enough gas for the BTU rating, the line has to be upsized from the meter.
Venting: Moving from a tank to a tankless usually means abandoning the old flue and running new dedicated venting to an approved termination point.
Location change: Relocating the unit from an interior closet to an exterior wall adds water, gas, and electrical runs.
Condensate handling: Condensing units produce acidic condensate that needs a drain and, in most cases, a neutralizer.
Water treatment: Adding a softener or filtration at the same time protects the heat exchanger and is cheaper installed together than separately.
We quote all of this up front. You see the full scope before work starts, and the price does not change mid job.
